Dance Evenings

This summer, the southern panoramic terrace of the Várkert Bazár once again comes alive with music, dance, and tradition as the beloved open-air Folk Dance Nights return. Running from late June to late August, this free cultural series offers evenings of authentic Hungarian folk music and guided dance instruction at one of Budapest’s most scenic outdoor venues.

What makes the series unique is its musical journey across Hungary’s diverse regions—each night focuses on a different folk tradition, from Mezőség to Szatmár, Rábaköz to Kalotaszeg. Both hearts and feet are taken on a tour through the country’s rich folkloric heritage. The evenings alternate between two bands: the nationally honored Pál István Szalonna és Bandája and the energetic young group Szabó Marci és barátai. Dance instructors are on hand to lead guests through the steps, making the experience welcoming for both newcomers and seasoned dancers.

The events are open to all ages—families, couples, groups of friends, or solo visitors can all easily join in. As dusk settles, the Várkert Bazár terrace becomes even more magical: the glow of lanterns, the sound of fiddles, flutes, and hammered dulcimers, and the rhythmic stomp of boots echoing over the Danube. It’s a night where city noise fades, and traditional melodies take center stage.
