The speciality of Indian classical dance is that it is a timeless link between past and present. It is the oldest dance style in the world that is still alive today and, although not in its present form, it existed in ancient times. In remote areas of India, different purposes and influences have created the styles now known as classical Indian dances. The dance techniques from these different areas differ in many ways, but they are linked by a common cultural background. The classical dances of India are not exhibits in a virtual dance museum, but great survivors of dance history, always able to adapt to the needs and challenges of the times, as they continue to do in the 21st century.

They are now part of the international dance world, and traditional and contemporary pieces are being created all over the world using these techniques.
The performance will give an insight into the secrets of some of India’s very different classical dance styles, how a piece is constructed, the differences between the genres, their history and what connects them, how hand signs speak, Indian acting, what a dancer needs to know, what the pieces are about and most importantly, what the audience needs to know to enjoy a performance as an initiate.
