Art in Tokyo

If you are interested in Japanese culture and would like to broaden your knowledge, this is the programme for you. The Várkert Bazaar has brought a film about Japanese art to the public with this sub-column. And of course, after the screening, we’ll be back to discuss the topic together!

Our film club will continue in 2024 with our art screenings. The last Tuesday of each month, we will screen the film with an invited expert on the topic: we will give you a guide on what to watch out for, raise thought-provoking questions and highlight the domestic aspects of the topic. This time, our invited guest will be Dr. Marianna Lázár, Assistant Professor at the Department of Japanese Studies at the Károli Gáspár Reformed University, who will give us an insight into the world of Japanese art. The idea behind the remarkable temporary exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, is to showcase the incredibly rich culture of 400-year-old Tokyo in an episode of Exhibition on Screen, entitled Art of Tokyo: From the fine woodcuts of Hokusai and Hiroshige, to pop art posters, contemporary photography, manga, film art and the art being made on the streets today, the documentary used the exhibition as a springboard to transport us to Tokyo, where we can discover for ourselves the city’s vibrant art scene. The strikingly illustrated and richly data-driven film is a metropolis that has been constantly destroyed and rebuilt over its 400-year history, making it one of the most vibrant and exciting cities on Earth. The sense of art and the need for it is manifested in all the little aspects of life: the way they prepare their food, the way they garden, the way they dress… They have a much broader interpretation, they extend the concept of ‘art’ to everything.”
