If you want to try plant painting but haven’t had the courage to do it yet, this is the place for you! This workshop will give you the opportunity to learn and grow at the same time! Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an artist to experience success here! Noémi Vészabó, Leonardo and Michelangelo award-winning painter, is running a highly successful series of workshops at YBL6 Art Space, the new location of the Castle Garden Bazaar. Why was the study of poisonous plants important in the Middle Ages? What botanical results did medieval scientists and alchemists achieve? This time, we will draw a poisonous plant, the “devil’s” angel’s trumpet, in pastel chalk or paint it in watercolour (gouache). Botanical illustration is the representation of the shapes, colours, textures and details of plants, which helped, among other things, to identify plant species for medicinal purposes. Botanical illustrations, once used for science and medicine, now also have an aesthetic function. Each session starts with a short introduction: the depiction, symbolism, medical and medicinal uses of medicinal plants, flowers and other plants from ancient times to the present day. We trace the legends: was the richly illustrated Voynich manuscript really drawn by nuns or was it an early work by Leonardo? Could it have been a medieval herbal medicine book or an alchemist’s manuscript? We also look into the Hungarian aspects of botanical drawing. The history of our Botanic Garden also unfolds in the spirit of botany. But we will also take a little adventure in the botanical gardens of Hungary. After the introductory lecture, we will draw or paint a picture of a medicinal plant or flower. Instructions and all the necessary supplies (dipped paper or good quality cardboard, black needle felt for contouring, pencil, watercolours, brushes) will be provided. The workshop will be a permanent work of art that participants can take home and decorate their homes with. Workshop Duration: 90 minutes (30-minute introduction and 60-minute creation) Recommended age: 14 years an up
