DRACULA
(Dracula | in original language with Hungarian subtitles)
black and white, subtitled, American film, 75′, 1931
directed by Tod Browning
cast: Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler, David Manners
This early classic of the horror film genre is based on the stage version of Bram Stoker’s famous novel. One of the best cinematographers of the German silent film, Karl Freund, borrowed the music from Tchaikovsky for the eerily foggy images. The film’s success spawned countless sequels and made Béla Lugosi, who played the blood-sucking Transylvanian count, a world star.
“The count enters the room just as Harker is shaving in front of the mirror. While shaving, Harker looks at himself in the mirror, but behind him he does not see Dracula, the vampire cannot be seen in the mirror, since he does not have a soul. The soul is a figure , which the believer can only see in the divine mirror.”
(Jure Mikuž: The mirror and the film)
