The story of unrequited love as an emotionally colored choreographic canvas. A ballet in three acts based on the famous novel by Alexander Pushkin comes to the stage of the Slovak National Theatre.
One of the most beautiful dramatic titles in ballet literature comes to the stage of the Slovak National Theatre in the choreography of the legendary John Crank and in a beautiful classical stage set.
Tatiana lives in the countryside and knows the big world only from books. However, the world appears in their family home in the form of the bon vivant Eugene Onegin, who turns Tatiana’s head. Onegin haughtily rejects her feelings and, after a conflict, shoots his friend Lensky in a duel. Since then, he has been on the run from himself as a “superfluous man.” After many years, he attempts to rekindle his relationship with Tatiana, who has become a true lady of high society through her marriage to Prince Gremin. After her rejection, Onegin becomes even more painfully aware of the emptiness of his life.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s adaptation of Pushkin’s verse novel Eugene Onegin marked a turning point in the history of opera in 1879. His sincere fascination with Tatiana’s unrequited love led Tchaikovsky to create a unique musical expression with which he sought to distance himself from the operatic pathos of his time. In his “lyrical scenes,” with their subtle psychological insight and irony toward romanticism, he depicted the skepticism of a weary era and society.
