Slovak Impressions II is undeniably a unique exhibition project that brings together 2 important Slovak artists – Katarína Vavrová and Jacqueline Rudavsky.
Both artists are intrigued and inspired by Slovak costumes, details, fragments and parts of which they inventively bring into their works. They unlock and revive the uniqueness and originality of folk costumes, connecting the past with the present.
Katarína Vavrová presents herself with a set of paintings in which a folklore theme predominates. Her intense touch and interest in folk art is not accidental. It dates back to 2018, when she created the paintings Slovak Impressions and, in collaboration with Ľubomir Feldek, the illustrations for the book Slovak Songs. She continues to transfer inspirational motifs from costumes into her magical figurative paintings, whose original iconography remains unchanged. Only her typical noble, tender, beautiful, pre-inspired female and childish faces and figures are veiled, enhanced with beautiful details and motifs from costumes (especially hats).
Jacqueline Rudavsky‘s jewellery is created by inventively combining a number of unconventional materials such as metal, stone, plastic, leather, leatherette, silver wire and various recycled materials. In her latest collection, she expands the expressive potential of her jewellery – sensitively incorporating old parts, fragments and details of costumes that are no longer usable to create an intriguing dialogue between historical and modern references. And she goes even further in her ideas. She brings her modern jewellery to the beautiful and timeless photographs of Karol Plicka, an artist who inventively uncovered the images of Slovakia.
Ondrej Rudavský very sensitively combines jewellery and photographs through photo collage. This remarkable exhibition, inspired by folk clothing, where the historical context is combined with a contemporary perspective, will be visually enriched by original costumes and caps from the private collection of Ing., PhD. Stanislav Talapka.
