Enter the mysterious world of Shaolin monks. An extraordinary show that will immerse you in the mysterious world of Zen Buddhism will take place on Friday, May 30, 2025 at the GOPASS Arena.

The extraordinary world of the Shaolin monks, whose incredible abilities have amazed more than 5 million people on 5 continents, is brought to you by producer Herbert Fechter. Since 1995 he has been bringing authentic Shaolin masters and students to the world’s stages. This year he is preparing a celebration of their 30-year tour.

A group of Shaolin monks will perform breathtaking exercises under the guidance of their 75-year-old Grandmaster. Audiences will have the opportunity to explore the secret world of Chinese philosophy and mythology, the journey of Zen’s founder, Bodhidharma, and see fantastic feats in a two-hour performance that will showcase such feats as crushing paving stones against the body, pushing a heavy load with a spear, and throwing a needle through glass. Nineteen top masters and their 75-year-old grandmaster will showcase the power of their Qi. This is not a trick or a circus, but a living tradition with 1500 years of history.

The Shaolin monks are fascinating characters with a rich history. Here are some interesting facts about them.

1. The origin of the Shaolin Temple

The Shaolin Temple was founded in the 5th century during the Northern Wei Dynasty in China’s Henan Province. It became famous for its association with Chan Buddhism (Zen in Japan) and martial arts.

2. Martial Arts Mastery

Monks are known for their exceptional skills in martial arts, especially kung fu. The idea of martial arts in Shaolin is deeply intertwined with Buddhist teachings, where physical discipline is seen as a means to enhance spiritual growth.

3. Legend of Bodhidharma

According to legend, the Indian monk Bodhidharma, who brought Chan Buddhism to China, taught monks physical exercises to improve their health and meditation. These exercises eventually evolved into what we know as Shaolin kung fu.

4. Shaolin kung fu styles

Shaolin kung fu is not a single style, but a collection of many different forms, with the most well-known being the “five animals” (tiger, crane, leopard, snake, and dragon). These forms are inspired by the movements and characteristics of the animals

5. Endurance and strength

Shaolin monks are known for their incredible physical endurance. They can do things that seem almost impossible, such as smashing bricks with their hands, balancing on sharp objects, or other extremely difficult stunts.

6. Shaolin monks and traditional medicine

In addition to martial arts, the monks practice traditional Chinese medicine and incorporate techniques such as acupuncture, herbal medicine and qigong into their daily life and training.

7. Cultural Influence

Shaolin monks have influenced popular culture worldwide, particularly through films and television shows such as The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Kung Fu, and The Matrix (featuring the character Morpheus practicing Shaolin-inspired kung fu martial arts).

8. The revival of the Shaolin Temple

The Shaolin Temple was severely damaged in the 17th century during the Qing Dynasty, but was later restored and is now a major tourist attraction. The temple remains an important centre for spiritual practice and martial arts training.

9. Monastic discipline

The monks follow a strict daily regimen that includes hours of meditation, physical training, and chanting. Their life is highly disciplined and emphasizes a balance between mind and body.

10. Modern Shaolin Monks

Today, Shaolin monks continue to teach martial arts, and many young students come to study with them. They have also formed martial arts groups that perform all over the world, showcasing their skills and upholding the Shaolin kung fu tradition.

Join in, discover the wisdom of Shaolin and be amazed by their physical and spiritual abilities.

After their success in 2024, the monks return in 2025 with even more energy!
