A generous park area was created in 1963 and 1964 under the auspices of the 1964 Vienna International Garden Festival on an island between the Danube and the Old Danube, between both the centre of Vienna and the districts of Floridsdorf and Donaustadt. The goal of the activity was to gradually clean up the existing site, which included a waste dump, a former parade ground that was notorious for executions during the Nazi era, and the “Bretteldorf” squatters’ settlements.
The park was designed by Alfred Auer, the Director of Vienna’s Parks and Gardens at the time. He created a multi-level park with special exhibition and theme gardens typical of a garden festival, such as a rose garden, a lily garden, a nation’s garden, a Paracelsus herb garden, and a moorland garden. The park’s centrepiece is the 250-meter-tall Danube Tower, which provides a 360-degree view of the entire city. Many of the garden festival’s features, such as a giant chess board, skatepark, and petting zoo, have since been dismantled or adapted for other purposes. The park has become a favourite among people of all ages.
In addition to the countless flower beds and the large pond in the middle, the many possible sports activities are popular reasons to visit Danube Park. With bike paths, free tennis courts, mini-golf courses and plenty of space to relax, the Danube Park has everything you need for a day in Vienna.
