Wien Modern 2026 will take place in Vienna from October 30 to November 30, 2026, and stands as Austria’s largest and most significant festival for contemporary music. For over a month, Vienna will be entirely dedicated to new sounds, as international composers, ensembles, and soloists present their work.
Visitors can look forward to a diverse program featuring orchestral concerts, experimental performances, world premieres, sound installations, and audiovisual projects.
In addition to traditional major concert venues such as the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Musikverein, the festival incorporates numerous innovative and unconventional spaces throughout the city—including museums, theaters, churches, art associations, and clubs.
Vienna Modern 2026 begins on opening day with unexpected sounds from cicadas, grasshoppers, nursery web spiders, carpenter ants, psyllids, psyllids, Anopheles mosquitoes, and mason bees. The focus is on the work “With the Danube” by Viennese composer Pia Palme and her team. You can also look forward to New Zealand deep-listening pioneer Annea Lockwood with her Sound Map of the Danube at the MAK Forum, or an opera: Tree of Codes by Liza Lim.
Eight unconventional exhibitions and installations also await you: Bernhard Leitner: SOUNDSPACESCULPTURE (Secession, September 10–November 22), Danube Murmurs & River Whispers (ZOOM Children’s Museum, September 23, 2026–September 5, 2027), Annea Lockwood: A Sound Map of the Danube (MAK, October 27–November 29), the publicly accessible long-term installation Annea Lockwood: Piano Garden (Otto Wagner Area, from November 4), the insect sounds of the Chuchchepati Orchestra (Vienna Konzerthaus, October 30–November 10), and interactive installations by Olga Neuwirth and Elfriede Jelinek (Musikverein). 31.10.–04.11.), Heike Kaltenbrunner: Noise of War (Ruprechtskirche 08.11.) and Christoph Theiler: Plantage (Theater am Werk im Kabelwerk 23.–24.11.).
