Magical Christmas at Rathausplatz

Every year, Vienna is transformed into a fairytale city full of lights, the scent of punch and traditional Christmas treats. The Christmas markets, known for their history and unmistakable atmosphere, attract visitors from all over the world to experience the magic of Advent right in the heart of the city.

Christkindlmarkt Rathausplatz will officially open on Saturday, November 16, 2025, on Rathausplatz in the center of Vienna. During the Advent season, the square will be transformed into a magical Christmas market with over 150 wooden stalls where visitors can find handmade Christmas decorations, traditional gifts, sweets, punch and grilled food. The market is open daily from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. In addition to the stalls, the market also offers a winter ice rink in the park in front of the town hall, which is illuminated with thousands of LED lights and creates a magical atmosphere for families and couples.

For children, there is the “Christmas World” mini carousels, a nativity scene and craft workshops where they can make their own little gifts. The market’s program is rounded off by a heart tree, special facade lighting of the town hall and musical performances. Admission to the market is free, you only pay for food, drinks or souvenirs. The market is easily accessible by public transport, for example with the subway line U2 (“Rathaus”) or the streetcars and buses that go to the Rathausplatz/Burgtheater stop.

It is recommended to come in the late afternoon, when the light decorations are switched on and the atmosphere is at its most intense. Christkindlmarkt Rathausplatz is the perfect place to start the Christmas season in Vienna, with music, lights, the smell of punch and traditional Christmas decorations that will delight every visitor.
