Film festival on Rathausplatz

As summer nights warm up in Vienna, Rathausplatz transforms into a unique open-air cinema: from June 28 to August 31, 2025, the beloved Film Festival at Rathausplatz returns—an annual cultural highlight that delights both music lovers and food enthusiasts alike.

Instead of recent movie premieres, this festival places music at center stage. Each evening at dusk, a giant screen showcases high-quality recordings of operas, concerts, and pop gigs—all with free admission.

The lineup is impressively diverse: performances by Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Robbie Williams, Queen, Whitney Houston, and Bruce Springsteen share the screen with classical masterpieces such as Carmen, La Bohème, Elektra, Die Fledermaus, and Swan Lake. The festival perfectly blends musical variety with the unique charm of Vienna, set against the backdrop of the stunning neo-Gothic City Hall.

The event is intentionally relaxed and open: visitors can come and go as they please, stay for a full evening or just drop in briefly—there’s no obligation. This welcoming atmosphere makes it a true summer highlight for all age groups.

A key part of the experience is the large food & drink area, open daily from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Dozens of stalls offer global cuisine—from couscous and curry to schnitzel and sausages, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. Cocktails, wine, and freshly tapped beer round off the culinary offering, making it the perfect way to start or end a warm summer night.

New in 2025: five large “Skyliner” canopies provide shade and rain protection—ensuring a carefree cultural experience no matter the weather.

What began as an opera-focused event has grown into a celebration of musical diversity, with a structured weekly schedule that helps you choose your perfect evening:
