The show “Austropop. From Mozart to Falco” tackles the not wholly uncontroversial term “Austropop”. The exhibition traces the popular, subversive, and critical aspects of music and art “made in Austria,” spanning the years from Mozart to Falco and beyond. “Austropop” and cabaret have a special relationship. Among the outstanding writers of the interwar period were Fritz Löhner-Beda and Fritz Grünbaum, Armin Berg and Hermann Leopoldi.
Their cryptic humour, which always eluded the censors, added salt to society’s wounds. When forced to emigrate during the Nazi era, they found success with their – translated – texts.
Following WWII, Karl Farkas, Gerhard Bronner, Georg Kreisler, and Helmut Qualtinger, with his “Herr Karl,” and many other like-minded individuals, continued the tradition of holding a mirror up to society.
