We are pleased about the variety of films we can offer our audience at this year’s festival. This year there is a particularly large selection of animated films, which is partly due to the fact that live-action films for younger target groups are becoming rarer on the international market, but this genre also has a special appeal due to the possibilities of formal and colour design.
Films are a window to the world and an excellent medium for learning more about other cultures, which is why we have selected contributions from various European countries and also offer films from Canada, the USA, Australia and Iran. We show the films in their original version and speak them live in German directly in the cinema in order to convey the deepest possible understanding of other life worlds.
The stories that are told are adapted to the respective target group. They range from simple chronologically presented stories for our youngest audience to exciting adventures and finely observed everyday narratives to – also cinematically – complex contributions about growing up. Relationships between parents/grandparents and their children play a major role in this year’s context. In cooperation with the Theater der Jugend we offer a film version of the classic THE SECRET GARDEN this year.
The children’s jury awards the prize for the best film and the UNICEF prize, and all visitors can vote for the most popular film of the festival. The award-winning films will be shown again one week later in the matinees of all three festival cinemas.
As part of our educational programme, the festival is rounded off by a theatre-pedagogical workshop, film discussions in the classroom as well as accompanying documents for the follow-up of the films.
