Reading in the Park Vienna

Reading in Park is back again this year! An event where young children are invited to spend some time in nature and learn about the wondrous and exciting world of books. Children will have the opportunity to read some of the books there, play, colour or borrow the books. The aim of these activities is to get the little ones to take up reading as a leisure activity.

Every summer, the “Reading in the Park” event invites children aged 3 to 10 to immerse themselves in the exciting world of books. They can read, play, and draw. The event has been very successful since 1981 and is an integral part of summer leisure activities for many families. This extra-curricular reading promotion project is organised by the Institute for Youth Literature on behalf of wienXtra as part of the Wiener Ferienspiel.

The action
Spread out blankets and book baskets with a wide range of picture books, children’s books and non-fiction books are available for browsing and borrowing at playgrounds in parks. Trained supervisors read aloud, do handicrafts and paint with the children and offer various accompanying animations.

Objectives
– To create a positive reading atmosphere
– To offer unbureaucratic borrowing opportunities
– To experience reading as part of the daily play and leisure programme
– Promote cross-cultural and cross-language interaction
