Quilapayún

Quilapayún from Chile is one of the most enduring and influential representatives of Nueva Canción Chilena, the Latin American music movement that emerged in the mid-1960s in Chile.

Quilapayún was formed in 1965 by Julio Numhauser and the brothers Julio and Eduardo Carrasco. The trio, who called themselves ‘the three bearded men’, met the following year the legendary Chilean singer and poet Victor Jara, with whom they had a close and productive artistic collaboration for many years. Together with Jara, they recorded the album Canciones Folcloricas de America in 1967 and toured the Soviet Union, Italy, France and other parts of Europe in the same year. After the military coup in Chile in 1973, they were forced into exile and lived in France for more than a decade.

One of the group’s most famous songs is “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido”, roughly “The united people will never be defeated”, written by Chilean songwriter and playwright Sergio Ortega.

On 11 September 1975, a large solidarity concert was organized at Konserthuset Stockholm where Quilapayún performed with the Hoola Bandoola Band, Arja Saijonmaa and Victor Jara’s widow Joan Jara. Therefore, it feels incredibly great for us at Selam to now, almost 50 years later, be able to present Quilapayún at Konserthuset Stockholm.
