The Jesus and Mary Chain

With their first Creation Records-released, cacophonous 1984 single Upside Down, misanthropic working-class brothers Jim and William Reid from East Kilbride just south of Glasgow burst into a musical climate characterized by mostly super-slick synth and radio pop. It was one of the songs that allowed indie rock to enter a new uncompromising phase, and it also paved the way for American kindred spirits in the vein of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. Next year, the band will celebrate 40 years together and head out on tour with three stops in Sweden – April 3 at Pustervik in Gothenburg, April 6 at Münchenbryggeriet in Stockholm and April 7 at Plan B in Malmö.

After six albums and many years of a strained relationship between Jim and William, The Jesus and Mary Chain broke up in 1999. Eight years later, the band reunited for a gig at Coachella (where Scarlett Johansson joined them on stage for the Lost In Translation-esque song Just Like Honey) and have since been active again with a new album – Glasgow Eyes – due this spring.
