Tamikrest

The Tuareg nomads Tinariwen made the desert blues of northern Mali world famous. Tamikrest belong to a younger generation – and it shows. They innovate their sound and don’t hesitate to bring in a little more influence from Western rock music. They themselves have said that in addition to their tuareg heritage, they have also listened to Algerian musician Rachid Taha, flamenco and Pink Floyd.

DN’s Nils Hansson included them in his list of “Hottest bands from the desert” and especially with the acclaimed album Kidal they have really taken the step out into the world with their Tuareg rock’n’roll. The music revolves around the Tuaregs’ struggle for existence: the 2012 Tuareg uprising led to their own independent state for a short time. However, this state only lasted for a short year before being occupied by al-Qaeda, which imposed its extremely strict interpretation of Islamic law. The area was subsequently liberated by the French military – but self-determination for Tuaregs was not high on the agenda. It is these experiences that form the painful backdrop to the hauntingly beautiful yet tragically sad desert blues of Tamikrest. The guitars howl, Ousmane Ag Mossa sings beautifully and wistfully about the struggle for his people. It is strong, unique and important – and very proud music that is enormously powerful live.

On their latest album Tamotaït, Tamikrest is back with songs of protest, oppression, revolution and a positive future. The sound is their typical desert bluesy swing and the melodies are a mix of traditional African music and western rock.
