On one of September’s special weekends, it is well worth stepping off the usual tourist trail and discovering a lesser-known side of Budapest and Hungary. The Days of Cultural Heritage will take place on September 19–20, with this year’s central theme being “Heritage at Risk – Renewal, Rethinking and Bringing Places Back to Life.”

The two-day event is a perfect choice for anyone who loves history, architecture, unique city walks and hidden places, or simply enjoys discovering something new in the streets of Budapest.

Throughout the weekend, special buildings, historic sites, gardens and other heritage locations will open their doors to visitors. There will also be numerous guided walks and special programmes to choose from.

Step inside places you normally wouldn’t be able to visit!

One of the most exciting aspects of the Days of Cultural Heritage is the opportunity to visit buildings and sites that are normally closed to the public or only accessible on a limited basis.

Historic palaces, beautiful old buildings, unique institutions, gardens and lesser-known locations across the city can all become part of the programme.

This is much more than simply visiting an old building. The stories connected to each location are what make the experience truly special. Visitors can learn about the people who once lived, worked or built these places, as well as discover how individual buildings and neighbourhoods have changed over the decades and centuries.

One of the highlights of the weekend is a guided heritage walk.

Themed walks offer the chance not only to explore fascinating buildings and neighbourhoods, but also to discover stories that are often left out of traditional sightseeing tours.

With the help of knowledgeable guides, the different eras of Budapest come to life, making it easier to imagine how people lived, worked and spent their everyday lives here decades or even centuries ago.

New Stories Behind Old Buildings

This year’s theme is particularly fascinating because it focuses not only on the heritage of the past, but also on its future. Many historic buildings have lost their original purpose, while others are waiting to be restored. Some have even become partly or completely abandoned.

Preserving a historic building does not necessarily mean keeping it exactly as it once was. An old building can be given a new purpose, transformed into a cultural or community space, and brought back to life.

A Completely Different Way to Explore the City

If you have visited Budapest several times before, the Days of Cultural Heritage are a fantastic opportunity to see the city from a completely different perspective. Instead of focusing on the best-known attractions, this weekend puts lesser-known buildings, stories and neighbourhoods in the spotlight.

A historic façade, a beautiful staircase, a hidden courtyard or a historic garden can offer an experience that is easy to miss during a traditional sightseeing tour.
