On April 13, 2025, Sunday, lovers of urban exploration and culinary experiences are invited to a truly special city walk in the heart of Budapest’s 9th district: the Gastronomic Adventure on Tompa Street and Ferenc Square. This program offers a unique insight into the past, present, and gastronomic life of one of the city’s rapidly developing neighborhoods south of the Grand Boulevard.
The walk will be guided by Szilvia Péter, an experienced tour guide, whose storytelling will bring the area’s history to life while participants get a taste of one of Budapest’s fastest-growing quarters.
The tour begins at Bakáts Square Church (also known as the St. Francis of Assisi Church), a gem of Neo-Romanesque architecture, making it a fitting starting point for this urban adventure. From there, the walk continues along Tompa Street, lined with green trees. Over the past decades, this street has become one of Budapest’s new culinary hubs, where the city’s industrial past blends excitingly with the atmosphere of trendy bistros and cafés. Participants will stop at one such stylish venue to enjoy a refreshing drink, allowing them to not only see but also taste the unique character of the neighborhood.
One of the highlights of the walk is that it provides not only a historical overview but also practical gastronomic tips. After passing beyond the Grand Boulevard, the tour will arrive at Ferenc Square, where it will make stops at two special venues. One is an artistic wine bistro offering a unique selection of drinks, perfect for wine enthusiasts. The other is a film-themed burger bar, blending gourmet cuisine with creative nods to pop culture.
The program is limited to 25 participants, ensuring an intimate atmosphere and the chance for personal questions and conversations. Participation requires pre-registration, and the fee is 1,500 HUF per person, which covers the full cost of the walk – making this not just an event but a great value urban adventure.
This gastronomic walk is not only for tourists: it offers surprises for those who think they already know every corner of the 9th district. After this afternoon, participants will surely look at the streets across from the Grand Boulevard with new eyes – whether it’s for a future meet-up, a date, or a friendly gathering.
