On August 20, Budapest will once again celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian state with a spectacular programme of events.

The St. Stephen’s Day celebrations will offer cultural, family and music programmes at numerous locations throughout the day, with one of the main highlights taking place in the evening: a spectacular light and fireworks show above the Danube. The 2026 celebrations will span more than twenty locations across Budapest.

The highlight of the evening, the “Game of Fire and Lights”, will begin at 9 PM, transforming Budapest’s skyline with a spectacular display of light. The show will take place around the Buda and Pest riverbanks, making it possible to enjoy the spectacle from several points along the Danube.

In addition to the fireworks, one of the highlights of the programme will be a drone show, with spectacular formations appearing above the Danube and complementing the evening’s light display. The visual experience will be further enhanced by light installations and projections on buildings, including around the Hungarian Parliament Building, the Hungarian National Gallery and Gellért Hill.

However, the August 20 celebrations are about much more than the evening’s spectacular show. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy concerts, food and drink events, cultural performances, family activities and traditional programmes at various locations across Budapest. Those looking for a full-day experience can explore several venues before heading towards the Danube in the evening to end the day with a spectacular celebration.

Fireworks and Light Show

The “Game of Fire and Lights” is scheduled to take place from 9:00 PM to 9:30 PM, with the main spectacle centred around the Buda and Pest riverbanks. The event is free to attend.

It is worth setting out early, however, as large crowds are expected around the Danube due to the national holiday celebrations and the evening’s spectacular programme. To secure a good view, it is recommended to arrive well before the show and find a suitable spot along the river.

Location: Budapest, the Buda and Pest riverbanks
Fireworks and light show: 9:00–9:30 PM
Admission: Free
Date: August 20, 2026
