“Recommended milestones” – this could be the title of Péter Nagy’s piano recital. Completed in the summer of 1804, the Piano Sonata in C major is one of the most important works of Ludwig van Beethoven’s middle, ‘heroic’ period, and was dedicated to his friend and patron, Count Waldstein. Robert Schumann’s Fantasia in C major was completed in 1836, but the composer made major revisions before its publication in 1839. The revised form is a central work of its composer and of early Romanticism. It is dedicated to the great contemporary, Franz Liszt. In contrast, Béla Bartók dedicated his only Piano Sonata, dated 1926, to his very close relative, his wife Ditta Pásztory. The Sonata is one of the key works of the composer’s ‘year at the piano’ and an early harbinger of a new, more classical and more pure creative era.
