On 19 October, the “Hungarian Sea Resort” will make the last stop of its exhibition series. After Boglár, Zamárdi and Mindszentkálla, visitors will now be able to see the summer exhibition in the capital. In addition to the great works of art, the organisers are also preparing delicious drinks and music.
At the opening, perfumer Zsolt Zólyomi will participate, who will evoke the world of retro fragrances.

After the highly successful exhibition in Balatonboglár, the exhibition will continue in Budapest with new pictures. Péter Weiler and the balatonoffseason instagram page have teamed up for an exciting artistic collaboration. Based on Dorka Bartha’s photos documenting the built environment of Lake Balaton, Péter Weiler is creating new artworks that evoke the events of the summer of 1989, the summer of regime change, and the mood of the time.
In the off-season, Dorka Bartha, who runs the balatonoffseason instagram page, rides a retro Csepel bike around the lake’s sleeping settlements to photograph winterized holiday homes, closed down flame ovens, restics and beaches without people. She documents the seldom seen, yet beautiful face of Lake Balaton, the tranquillity and stillness of his images transcending the summer hustle and bustle.
One of Weiler’s central themes is Lake Balaton, where he spent all his childhood summers. This love of the lake and its memories is also a mirror of a collective consciousness that binds all Hungarians together. Of all the artist’s childhood holidays, 1989 was the most memorable, because the political winds of regime change and German reunification could be felt most acutely here in the social holiday resorts, campsites and beaches. It was a strange combination of an ordinary summer on Lake Balaton and a turning point in world history. The NDK secret service was still watching its citizens on holiday on Lake Balaton, while the Pan-European Picnic leaflets suggesting border demarcation were being distributed in campsites. Weiler’s new pictures seek parallels between freedom as an idea and the free weekdays offered by summer. Life goes on, the lake is lukewarm, summer is coming to an end, but nothing will ever be the same again.
