For the first time, the Hungarian public is able to see a comprehensive exhibition of El Greco’s oeuvre, which will be open until 19 February 2023. The exhibition gives a broad overview of the life’s work of El Greco, or Domenikos Theotokopoulos, one of the most outstanding masters in the history of European art. Visitors can see almost seventy works by the Spanish-Cretan master, which show both his formal complexity and his great stylistic development.
El Greco was of Greek origin, yet he is known as one of the most important Spanish painters of all time. The journey from Crete to Toledo can be interpreted as a painterly and spiritual journey of a master who created with a sacred obsession. The exhibition in Budapest presents the most outstanding works of El Greco’s vast oeuvre in chronological order, from his early Italian-influenced paintings to his visionary works from Spain.
Guided tours of the exhibition are available for a fee of 1.500 Ft (payable in addition to the valid entrance fee). Guided tours are available mostly on Saturdays and Sundays.
