Culture Festival At Bakáts Square

If you’re looking for a weekend program in Budapest that combines concerts with food, family activities, exhibitions, theatre, workshops and unique community experiences, then head to Bakáts Square between August 28 and 30.

The Bakáts Feszt is being held for the 11th time this year and is one of Ferencváros’ biggest cultural events. For three days, Bakáts Square and its surroundings will be filled with music, art, activities, food and plenty of people.

Friday: exhibitions, films and concerts

The festival kicks off on Friday afternoon. At Bakáts Bunker, visitors can enjoy an exhibition, short film screenings and a street art workshop, while various cultural programs take place throughout the surrounding area.

Classical music fans can enjoy Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 performed by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. In the evening, the main stage at Bakáts Square takes over with live music.

At 7:00 PM, ДEVA takes the stage, followed by Bohemian Betyars at 8:30 PM, making music the perfect way to end the first day.

Saturday: family activities and major concerts

Saturday is worth arriving early for. Children can enjoy a concert by Katáng, a stilt-walking performance and various games, while adults can choose from historical walks, book presentations, film screenings and exhibitions.

There is plenty of music throughout the day as well. At 3:00 PM, cimbalom players Kálmán Balogh and Miklós Lukács perform, followed by Hot Jazz Band at 7:00 PM. At 8:30 PM, Anima Sound System takes the stage with several special guests.

Those looking to get moving can also enjoy a tango performance and dance lesson, followed by an evening salsa session in the square.

Sunday: something for families, culture lovers and music fans

Sunday brings another packed schedule. Children can enjoy Gombóc Artúr a világ körül, an outdoor giant-puppet theatre performance and plenty of other playful activities.

For those who enjoy exploring Budapest, there will be local history programs, including a walk following in the footsteps of The Paul Street Boys.

In the afternoon, visitors can enjoy an Irish step-dance performance, a creative writing workshop, film screenings and various cultural programs. The festival then wraps up with more live music: Mörk at 7:00 PM and Duckshell at 8:30 PM.

Food Street: pizza, tacos, wine and everything a festival needs

For the first time this year, the Bakáts Feszt will also feature a dedicated Food Street. Organized by Pancs – gastroplacc, it will bring together wineries, restaurants and street food vendors.

There will be Neapolitan pizza, BBQ, tacos, lángos, mini pancakes, craft ice cream, desserts, specialty coffee, wine and pálinka. So even if food is your main reason for visiting, there will be plenty to discover.

Plenty for children and families too

One of the festival’s biggest strengths is that it is about much more than concerts. The Civil Village will feature various organizations and communities, along with craft activities, games, storytelling, improv programs, literary activities, jewelry making and tote bag painting.

Children will have plenty of opportunities to play and create, while adults can explore a wide range of cultural and community programs.

Explore the Ráday Quarter and win prizes

The festival also includes the Ráday Quarter Adventure, featuring 20 nearby cultural and hospitality venues. The idea is to explore different locations and collect stamps in your Ráday Passport. Three stamps can earn you a Ferencváros tote bag, six a mug, and nine a ticket to a Budapest Park concert in September.

So the festival doesn’t have to end at Bakáts Square — it’s also worth exploring the surrounding Ráday Quarter.

A weekend where there really is something for everyone

One of the best things about Bakáts Feszt is that it isn’t built around just one genre. One moment you can be listening to a concert, the next exploring an exhibition, joining a workshop, walking through Ferencváros, or sitting down for some good food and drinks.
