Balaton Retro Garden Cinema

This Friday, at Várkert Bazár, we can get an insight into what the real retro Balaton feeling of life was like. The work of Zsigmond Gábor Papp takes us back to a time that will evoke nostalgic images in many of us in the context of a cozy garden cinema.

With the best Hungarian works of recent years, we welcome all movie fans who want fresh air in the heart of Budapest, in a beautiful, panoramic, dog-friendly location.
Before the screening, we will talk to one of the creators of the film, the director, the cinematographer or the main character, who will give us an insight behind the scenes of the film and tell us about the preparation, the shooting and the afterlife of the film.

Balaton also created typical figures, as the “Balaton ice cream shop”, the “Balaton fish fryer” and the “Balaton flame grill” were the first private entrepreneurs who got rich quickly and were envied but somewhat looked down upon in the pre-capitalist years of the late Kádár era. Of course, there is the generational nostalgia for the Balaton vacations as a child and their indelible images: the one-forint chocolate-vanillas, the stick-on red and blue rubber mattresses, the salami and cheese rolls sweating in the windows of the catering buffets, the camp flag raisings, the free Saturdays, the jamming with a Trabant at the old Road 7, the carpet on the wall of the holiday home and the kitchen curtain made of colorful plastic strips.
