Summer is the time when cinemas move from closed buildings to the starry night sky – and Bratislava is no different. Every Wednesday there will be screenings in Lakeside Park. Screenings start at 9:30 p.m. in July, 9:00 p.m. in August.

So bring a few friends (it’s always better to watch a movie with someone who can appreciate it with you), something warm to wear (in case the night is a little less than tropical), and maybe a blanket, as the benches can be a little hard for long periods of sitting, so make yourself comfortable. See you there with other film enthusiasts? 🙂

Nepela

The film charts a period in the life of figure skater Ondrej Nepela, who returns in 1972 with a gold medal from the Winter Olympics in Sapporo, where he achieved his greatest sporting success. Not only fame awaits him at home, but also the reality of the communist regime. Everyone treats him like a celebrity, but the sensitive Ondrej yearns above all to escape from this unpleasant golden cage for him. He wants to live freely and in harmony with who he feels he is. However, the promised chance to go to a professional ice show is denied to him at the last minute and he is ordered to participate in the next world championships. Disappointed Nepela must find new motivation and also cope with the tragic death of his best friend, figure skater Hanka Mašková. Ondrej Nepela is one of the greatest Czechoslovak sports legends. He won every conceivable award during his sports career, and his life story is still a huge inspiration to this day.

In the mountains

Lucia, a young woman from the city, inherits a mountain hut from her supposedly biological father, a former chief of the mountain service, whom she never knew. That’s why she comes to the mountains, but instead of an empty cottage, she finds rescuer Matěj, his dog Bedřich and others who run the facility as a hostel for outdoor schools. Lucie has to cope not only with the merciless world of the mountains, but also with the sarcastic Matěj and challenges that gradually force her to push her own limits. Comical situations, mountain rescue operations and accidental misunderstandings lead to an unexpected rapprochement. Although Lucia initially struggles with the harshness of the mountains and Matěj’s cynical humor, their relationship gradually turns into friendship and perhaps even something more…

The Richest Woman in the World

Marianne Farrère (Isabelle Huppert), a multi-millionaire and head of the Windler Group, is the richest woman in the world. Pierre-Alain Fantin (Laurent Lafitte) is a Parisian dandy, writer and photographer. After their chance meeting during a photo shoot, the two become inseparable friends. Loosely inspired by the real-life scandal surrounding L’Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, the film offers a glimpse into a world of unimaginable wealth, where the line between sincere friendship and calculated manipulation is dangerously blurred. Marianne’s daughter (Marina Foïs) struggles with her mother’s unexpected affection for this younger man and launches a private investigation that uncovers not only personal secrets but also political corruption reaching into the highest circles. A fascinating psychological study of whether money can buy happiness, or whether it is just an expensive illusion.

Flow

The world seems to be ending. There is only water everywhere and the only survivors are the animals. A black cat with a lonely soul has to leave his home, which has been flooded by a devastating flood. He finds refuge on a small boat, where he has to share the cramped space with other species – a good-natured capybara, a chatty lemur, a huge bird and a faithful dog. Although they are all completely different, they must learn to cooperate and trust each other in order to survive in an unknown land full of dangers. A cat’s odyssey is a visually stunning story without words, which tells of friendship, solidarity and the search for courage in the face of the unknown through an adventurous journey through a flooded world. Fascinating animation and captivating music make this film an unforgettable experience for viewers of all ages.
