Formed in the ruins of The Robben Ford Group, the Yellowjackets immediately gained much attention for their 1981 debut album. Even then, they took the legacy of Weather Report and mixed it with influences from greats like John Coltrane and funky soul-jazz rhythms.
Original members Russell Ferrante and William Kennedy, along with the rest of the musicians, offer both impressive technique and a wonderful mix of different jazz and fusion styles. But it is still – as the London Jazz News critic wrote in his review – live that Yellowjackets should be experienced. On stage, their deep musicality and exuberant virtuosity come into their own.
