If you feel like going for a one-day adrenaline trip in the surroundings of Bratislava, we have some tips for you on interesting Via Ferrata. We have selected the best things to do in the area, both for beginners and experienced climbers.
Ferrata is 130 km away from Bratislava, which will take you about an hour and a half by car. It is located in the Gutenstein Alps in the Hohe Wand National Park and the starting village is Grünbach am Schneeberg. The hardest sections are graded D, but the bulk of it is easy B to C. A speciality is the suspension bridge and ladders perpendicularly perched in the wall, which can be quite uncomfortable for some. At the top you can refresh yourself in a hut called Hubertushaus. The ferrata is recommended for more experienced hikers, but it is one of the most beautiful in the area.
Two hours away from Bratislava near the Hohe Wand mountain there is a very interesting ferrata also suitable for more experienced hikers. From Bratislava you can get here on the way to Wiender Neustadt – from where you continue on the B26 to Grünbach am Schneeberg. In the village keep straight on and after the church turn right to Seiser Toni where the starting point is. An interesting feature of the Ferrata is the narrow chimney which you can’t fit through with your rucksack, so you need to take it down. At the top you will again find a hut where you can refresh yourself. As this ferrata is close to the above mentioned Gebirgsvereinsteig you can comfortably do them both in one day.
A very nice relatively short ferrata located in the Pittentaler nature reserve, which ends at the castle ruins and offers spectacular views. It takes about an hour and a half to get here from Bratislava. Difficulty ranges from C to D, so again, this is not a ferrata suitable for beginners. The advantage is the short climb to the start which will take you about 30 minutes. The road here leads in the direction of Wiener Neustadt – Gleißenfeld – Lindenalle, where there is a car park by the bridge. From the bridge you continue into the forest along the marked “Türkensturz steil”, “Pittentalersteig”, which will lead you to the start of the Ferrata.
Ferrata of medium difficulty, quite long with beautiful exposed sections. In the ratio of difficulty to the experience it offers, we consider this ferrata a must-do for every climbing enthusiast. The road here leads from Vienna along the A2 towards Graz, then on to Gloggnitz- Reichenau an der Rax- Prein an der Rax, at the end of which you turn right onto the Klettergebiet Preinerwand/Griesleitenhof, where you continue straight on until you reach the barrier where the car park is located. From the car park, signs will take you to the starting point in about an hour and a half. It takes 2 hours to get to the top and the whole route is along the south face, so especially in summer you have to watch out for the intense sun.
Approximately 120 km from Bratislava, this time in the south direction in the village Csesznek, there is an easy but very pleasant ferrata suitable for beginners as well as for more experienced climbers, as there are various difficult routes leading to the top, from A/B to E/F. The village of Csesznek is located halfway between Gyor and Balaton, so you can plan a visit to this place as a pleasant stop on your way to the Hungarian Sea. In the village, direction signs will lead you to a small car park, from where you continue across a bridge over a stream, then a short distance straight along a meadow where you will get a nice view of the castle, until you reach the ferry starting point. Here you have 5 different routes, the shortest and easiest one will take you a relaxing 20 minutes and the most challenging one about 40 minutes.
