With her personal expression, she has since the 60s created a unique place in Swedish musical life where jazz, groove rock and folk music meet. With her 25 solo albums, Merit has moved forward throughout her career with a strong sense of self and sensitivity in the music. She has collaborated with both The Ark and Beppe Wolgers, played on major jazz stages in New York and toured around Sweden and Norway. Her long experience invites a rare artistic depth. 50 years ago, Merit Hemmingson released her classic album Huvva, closely followed by the albums Trollskog and Bergtagen.
After her isolation during the pandemic, the new album Huvva! What time passes, where Merit has taken a deep dive into the waters of change and interpreted material from the three albums based on who she is today. In this work, the music has been rewritten, songs have been given new names, the stories have been set to music differently and in many ways have been reshaped into something new and unique. Between the sound waves, it is clear how her artistry and musical expression have evolved over the decades, but that the soul is the same in its subtle melancholy. Merit shows us the feeling of wanting to reach out and turn over stones that have lain untouched since time immemorial, just to catch a glimpse of what now lies beneath. Time passes and it pulls us along in its undertow. There is a weight in the melodies. The organ roars like the sea, caressing rocks, stones and seamounts and shaping them into something new. The sea and art, together they seek a never-ending depth. The calm in the stillness of restfulness meets the inevitable in the power of the tidal wave. In the brackish depths we meet through Merit Hemmingson’s music.
