Vienna Crime Museum

Located in Vienna’s second district, “Leopoldstadt,” the museum occupies one of the district’s oldest residences. Before its first recording in 1685, the house—then known as the “Seifensiederhaus”—had already been constructed and served for different purposes. Throughout the museum’s multiple rooms, guests can learn about the evolution of the criminal justice system from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The tourists can see both the mediaeval prison system and the last public hangings in Vienna. For fans of the macabre, this part is quite interesting.  In addition to the assassination attempt on Kaiser Franz Josef and the birth of the “Criminal Investigation Department,” visitors can also encounter a showcase of some of the most famous criminal cases of all time.

Feel the “dark side of Vienna” throughout the past three centuries as you learn about the city’s inhabitants and their ups and downs, loves and losses, joys and tragedies. All of that can be seen and experienced in the Vienna Crime Museum. 

The museum is open from Thursday to Sunday and during holidays from 10 AM to 5 PM. The prices for the tickets vary from 5.90 to 11 euros, depending on the age of the person. Family tickets are also available.
