The Strudlhofstiege is considered an important work of Viennese Art Nouveau. The complex takes its name from the painter and sculptor Peter von Strudel (1660-1714). He not only built the Strudelhof in 1690 – where he ran a private school for painters – but later also worked as director of the Academy of Fine Arts.
The famous staircase made of Mannersdorf limestone is located in Vienna’s 9th district. It connects Strudlhofgasse and Liechtensteinstrasse. Built according to a design by Johann Theodor Jaeger, it was opened in 1910: with a two-part basin wall fountain, curved flights of steps and mosaic cladding. A head mask serves as a gargoyle above the lower water basin, while an artistic fish mouth provides water above the upper fountain basin. The parts that were originally painted blue are now green.
3 ramps and 58 steps lead 11 meters upwards. The Strudlhofstiege is illuminated by 7 masts with hanging lights. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1962, 1984 and 2008. Today, selected open-air events – such as choir concerts – take place here regularly.
