Otto Wagner built the elaborately designed white villa in the green for himself and his “goddess wife” Louise from 1886 to 1888. The painter Ernst Fuchs, the main representative of Viennese Fantastic Realism, who died in 2015, made some changes to the villa and made it accessible to visitors.
The magnificent estate was built at the end of the 19th century as a summer residence for the Wagner family. With its legendary summer parties and salons, the Art Nouveau jewel was known far beyond the city’s borders. For it was here that the greats of their time came and went: Alongside Gustav Klimt, Adolf Loos or Gustav Mahler, the Wagner Villa was the meeting place of the fine Viennese artistic society. In terms of style, the residence was based on historicism and was intended to pay homage to Wagner’s favorite Italian architect, Palladio.
After the expropriation by the National Socialists, the once magnificent building fell into oblivion and eventually fell victim to various speculative transactions that almost led to its ruin.
With Ernst Fuchs, a breath of fresh air and fantastic ideas finally moved back into Hüttelbergstraße 26 at the beginning of the 1970s. Literally, because the artist, who had devoted himself to Fantastic Realism, had the property renovated and rebuilt for two years, partly true to the original and partly according to his own ideas. His paintings, sculptures and furniture are exhibited there. – Right next door, Hüttelbergstraße 28, is a second villa by Otto Wagner from 1912/13, which is much simpler and more modern in style.
