The Burggarten was designed in 1818 as the emperor´s private garden on an area of approximately 38.000 square metres.

Today, it is situated directly on the Ringstrasse, next to the Hofburg and the Albertina. It took some time before it was opened to the public in 1919, along with its monuments such as Mozart’s marble statue and Emperor Franz Josep’s bronze statue, as well as the Palmenhaus (palm house).

Previously, Viennese residents could only see this park through a beautifully styled fence. The construction of the 2.000 m2 palm house began in 1901. This glass and steel structure was designed by Friedrich Ohman.

The emperor used his private greenhouse for relaxation, as well as to bring nature into the heart of Vienna. Today, the Palmenhouse serves as a butterfly house where visitors can observe exotic, free-flying butterflies in a tropical nature-replicated setting. The entrance fee is around 7,00 Euro. It is certainly something you might want to try out.

The Palmenhaus Cafe-Restaurant is located in the centre of the 15-meter-high structure. You can drink or eat a fine meal there in a stylish setting surrounded by up to 10 m tall palm trees. You can even watch the butterflies through a glass wall if you sit near the left side of the building.
