The Museum of Hungarian Agriculture is celebrating its 130th anniversary with a three-day festival at the iconic Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest’s City Park. From June 19 to 21, visitors can enjoy a packed programme featuring exhibitions, guided tours, concerts, family activities, craft workshops, food tastings and unique castle experiences throughout the museum buildings, castle courtyard and Széchenyi Island.
The anniversary weekend offers a chance to explore the museum’s fascinating collections while taking part in special guided tours, castle walks and behind-the-scenes visits. Outside, the courtyard will be filled with artisan vendors, traditional heritage programmes and plenty of opportunities to discover Hungarian gastronomy.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy food and drink stalls offering local specialties, craft food demonstrations, wine, beer and pálinka tastings, chimney cakes and other traditional treats. The Artisan Street will also feature handmade products from local craftspeople.
Friday opens the celebration with educational and interactive experiences. The “Stories Preserved in Flavours” programme includes workshops, tastings and presentations focused on food traditions, alongside collection visits, a botanical walk and an evening concert by the Danubia Orchestra.
Saturday brings the largest programme lineup of the weekend. Folk dance performances, puppet theatre, acrobatic shows, early music concerts, Latin jazz and traditional Hungarian music will take place throughout the day. The castle grounds will host a medieval heritage camp with historical combat demonstrations, animal petting areas, pony activities, guided castle tours and a spectacular evening light show projected onto the castle walls. Please note that programmes starting after 6:00 PM on Saturday are part of the Night of Museums and require a valid event wristband.
Sunday focuses on family-friendly activities and outdoor experiences. Visitors can enjoy traditional heritage programmes, petting zoo activities, castle tours and a folk music dance house led by the Komisz Ensemble. The winners of the museum’s drawing and photography competitions will also be announced.
The museum’s permanent exhibitions will remain open throughout the event, including displays on the history of Hungarian agriculture, the National Horse Exhibition, the famous racehorse Kincsem, forestry, hunting, fishing and the history of Hungarian wine culture. Two temporary exhibitions will also be available, including the fascinating “Treasures from the Bone Collection” showcasing rare skulls, tusks and preserved specimens collected over the museum’s 130-year history.
