VILMOS TÁTRAI 110 – CONCERT AND EXHIBITION IN THE ÓBUDA COMMUNITY CENTRE. The violinist Vilmos Tátrai was the “one-man institution” of 20th century Hungarian music.

As a legendary concertmaster of the Hungarian State Orchestra, founder of the Tátrai String Quartet and the Hungarian Chamber Orchestra, he performed with great success in major concert halls in Hungary and around the world. He was one of the few people who had the opportunity to play with Béla Bartók’s direct collaborators and to record the composer’s works in the presence of Kodály. The world-renowned violinist is credited with the premiere of hundreds of works by contemporary composers, and as a professor at the Academy of Music he was a committed supporter of the future generation of musicians for the rest of his life.

His life’s work will be celebrated with a special selection of music by young members of his family and his artistic legacy.

At the memorial concert, pianists Nóra Gábor-Nagy and Janka Turcsányi will perform excerpts from Schumann and Ravel’s piano works for four hands.

The up-and-coming generation will be represented by the promising young musicians of the Bartók Konzi: Róza and Rita Sütő Sütő (violin), Benő Miksa Diák (viola), Zsuzsanna Fülöp (cello), who will perform a duo and a string quartet piece by the great-grandson of the artist, Mihály Tátrai.

In the second half of the chamber evening, Viktória Szilvásy (violin), a pupil of the master, and her partner András Rudolf (viola) will explore the classical melodies of his oeuvre in a unique approach.

The exhibition on the career of the Kossuth Prize-winning violinist Vilmos Tátrai, which opens during the week of the concert, is rounded off by photographs taken by his great-granddaughter Karolina Gál Teodóra Gál (School of Photography) using her great-grandfather’s Rolleiflex camera.
