Musical personalities: The musical was created by giants of the Czech and Slovak music scene such as Karel Svoboda and Slovak icon Jozef Bednárik.
Musical style: It combines rock elements, classical music, and dramatic orchestral music, creating a unique dark and tense atmosphere.
Cast: Stars such as Daniel Hůlka, Leona Machálková, and Lucie Bílá have appeared in several versions.
Stage and effects: Very innovative for its time – a moving stage, lighting effects, special costumes, and distinctive choreography.
International reach: Dracula has been translated into several languages and performed outside the Czech Republic – for example, in Germany, South Korea, and Poland.
The musical Dracula by Karel Svoboda is based on Bram Stoker’s classic novel about the infamous vampire, but it only loosely follows the story. The action takes place in the 15th century, the 19th century, and an unspecified near future. The musical premiered in 1995 in Prague, Czech Republic.
In 2009, it was revived with modernized scenes and adaptations, but the music and basic concept remained faithful to the original. The character of Dracula, played most famously by Daniel Hůlka, became his life role and made him one of the biggest stars of the Czech musical scene.
