Battle of Bratislava

We invite all history enthusiasts to Janka Kráľ Park in Bratislava on October 3, 2026, where the cultural and historical festival “The Battle of Bratislava” will take place.

The main part of the program will be a reenactment of a military siege from the first half of the 17th century, set in the historical context of Hungary.

As always, you can look forward to a historical encampment, demonstrations of period life, regimental displays, live music, a period parade through the Old Town, and, of course, the Battle of Bratislava—a reenactment of the Baroque military clash from 1620.

This year, we will travel back in time to 1620—the event will be a reenactment of the battle, or rather the brief siege, that took place at the city gates on October 8, 1620.

The armies of the rebellious Czech estates were already heading toward inevitable defeat in the famous Battle of White Mountain, and Gabriel Bethlen’s uprising was also losing momentum at that time. Therefore, the imperial commander Dampierre attempted to seize Bratislava—then known as Pressburg—which was still controlled by Bethlen’s men, with a surprise attack.

The battle lasted from early morning until four o’clock in the afternoon. Imperial soldiers fired at the city walls, and Dampierre himself led the assault group on three charges. During the final attack, however, he was struck by a fatal bullet, and his mercenaries were forced to retreat all the way to Vienna.
