Budapest is the capital of Hungary, divided into two parts—Buda and Pest—by the Danube. The city’s history stretches back centuries, and the beauty of the past is still reflected in some of its buildings and historic landmarks to this day. If this is your first time in Budapest, visiting the historical sights is a must.

Buda Castle District
Buda Castle is one of Budapest’s most famous historical landmarks. It is situated on Castle Hill, offering a beautiful view of the Danube and the Pest side of the city. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. In the Castle District, it’s worth taking a stroll through the narrow, charming streets, where you can discover old, colorful townhouses and historic buildings. Among the area’s most important attractions are Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion, and Matthias Church. Museums, galleries, and folk art shops also await visitors in the neighborhood. This is also where the Buda Funicular is located, which is fun for adults but even more exciting when you’re with kids.

Citadel
The Citadel is located at the top of Gellért Hill, one of the highest points in Budapest. What makes this place interesting is that it originally served as a military fortress. From here, you can enjoy the most fantastic panoramic view of Budapest. On a clear day, you can clearly see the Danube, Buda Castle, the Parliament Building, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, and many other famous buildings in Budapest. That’s why the Citadel and its surroundings are one of the most popular spots for sightseeing and photography in the capital. The Statue of Liberty, located at the top of the hill, depicts a female figure holding a palm branch in her raised hand; it has become one of Budapest’s most recognizable symbols today. It can be a fun game to spot Budapest’s various landmarks from the top of the Citadel. The newly renovated Citadel provides excellent lighting, ensuring that you can admire the sights in perfect clarity even in the evening lights. It’s worth arriving at sunset, as this is when an unforgettable experience is guaranteed.

Heroes’ Square
Heroes’ Square is one of Budapest’s best-known and most spectacular squares, located at the end of Andrássy Avenue, next to City Park. In the center of the square stands the Millennium Monument, construction of which began in 1896 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. At the center of the monument stands a statue of the Archangel Gabriel, and below it are statues depicting important figures from Hungarian history. On either side of the square are two major museums: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Műcsarnok. In addition to its historical significance, the square frequently hosts events and celebrations. It’s worth combining a tour of the area with a visit to City Park, where you’ll find, among other attractions, Vajdahunyad Castle and the Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

Parliament Building
The Parliament Building is one of Budapest’s most famous buildings and one of Hungary’s most important landmarks. It is located on the Pest side of the Danube, on Kossuth Lajos Square. The Parliament Building features both Neo-Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. Due to its immense size—it stands 96 meters tall—it is easily recognizable from a distance. The Hungarian Parliament sits in the Parliament Building, meaning this is where Hungarian members of parliament hold their sessions. The building houses the Holy Crown, as well as some of the coronation regalia, which are kept in the dome hall of the Parliament Building. The interior of the building is also open to visitors. During the tour, visitors can see, among other things, the grand staircase, the dome hall, and the former Upper House chamber. From the outside, it offers a particularly beautiful view from the Danube, especially in the evening when it is illuminated. With its imposing appearance, Neo-Gothic features, and unique beauty, it is considered one of the most beautiful parliament buildings in the world. If you’d like to admire it from the Buda side, Batthyány Square offers the best view.
