Earth day tour

Nature lovers are in for a special treat in Budapest: as part of the 29th “Earth Day” Sas Hill tour programs, participants will have the opportunity to discover the hidden natural treasures in the heart of the city on three separate occasions. These events take place on April 25, April 26, and May 1, starting from the Sas Hill Visitor Center located at 26 Tájék Street in District XI. Participation is free, but prior registration is required.

The Budai Sas Hill Nature Reserve, protected since 1957, holds unique natural values within the capital. On the rocky slopes of this 266-meter-high dolomite hill, many rare plant and animal species thrive—some of which are found only here in Hungary. Thanks to its special microclimate and geological features, the area has become a true habitat island amidst the urban landscape.

During the tours, participants will first be introduced to the wildlife and history of Sas Hill through a short film presentation at the Visitor Center. Following this, they will be guided along the nature trail by professional tour leaders, allowing them to experience the unique natural beauty of the area up close—including breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The full length of the trail is approximately 1 km, during which visitors will learn about the hill’s distinctive rock formations, such as the Bear Rock and Beethoven Rock, as well as its rich flora and fauna.

One of the gems of Sas Hill’s unique ecosystem is the European Eresus spider (Eresus sandaliatus), whose males, when threatened, lower their heads and raise their abdomens defensively, similar to bulls—hence their nickname “bull spider.” This rare species is one of the 286 spider species found on Sas Hill, which is home to nearly half of Hungary’s approximately 700 spider species.
