The most famous monument of Bratislava is certainly the Bratislava Castle. The “inverted table” rises above the Danube and can be seen from afar. When visiting Bratislava, you should definitely visit Bratislava Castle and in summer you can combine it with a good concert.
The castle is located on a hill overlooking the Danube and provides a strategic point for defence and control of trade routes. Due to its location, it has been an important fortress throughout history. The first findings point to the settlement of Bratislava Hill in prehistoric times. The strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes was also used by the Celts to build extensive dwellings and it is believed that the Romans also settled here during their territorial expansion. Bratislava Castle witnessed the country’s historical milestones, including the coronations of Hungarian kings and the signing of important treaties.
The castle’s elevated position offers breathtaking panoramic views of Bratislava, the Danube River and the surrounding countryside. It is a popular place where visitors can enjoy spectacular views and capture unforgettable photographs.
The castle is now home to the Bratislava Castle Museum, which exhibits artefacts and works of art presenting the history of the castle and the cultural heritage of Slovakia. Visitors can explore the interior of the castle, including the beautifully restored rooms and galleries. Currently, Bratislava Castle is the seat of the Historical Museum and the State Treasury.
If you’re looking for a place to relax, take a romantic stroll or just enjoy a beautiful view, be sure to make time for the Bratislava Gardens by the castle. Entrance to the gardens is free.
Whether you’re interested in history, architecture or simply enjoying the view, Bratislava Castle is a must-stop in Slovakia.
