Kamasi Washington

It’s unfortunately not common for jazz musicians to become popular these days, but if you’re looking for an example, you’ll find an excellent one in Kamasi Washington. The bandleader, tenor saxophonist and composer has managed to introduce a whole new generation of listeners to free, uncompromising jazz music since his big break with the ambitious 2015 triple album ‘The Epic’. And while it would be easy to cite his previous collaborations, such as working with Kendrick Lamar on his iconic album ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’, as the reason for his popularity, this is far from the whole truth. Washington’s metaphysical, patient music is oceans away from both hip-hop and pop music. Rather, Washington is a radical innovator of the spiritual legacy left behind by the likes of John Coltrane.

Despite having to deal with the expectations that come with being dubbed the great saviour of jazz, Kamasi Washington continues to navigate without apparent fear, prejudice or cynicism. ‘Heaven and Earth’ from 2018, the follow-up to the unanimously acclaimed debut, was also showered with superlatives and awards and now it’s time for the long-awaited third album which is named ‘Fearless Movement’! So far three songs have been shared, the latest being the transcendental collaboration with André 3000 on the song ‘Dream State’. On November 15, jazz giant Kamasi Washington and his band will come to Fållan in Stockholm and on November 16 he will play at Moriskan in Malmö.
