WITCH

The cult band WITCH – an acronym for We Intend To Cause Havoc – was Zambia’s biggest band of the 1970s. Blending British blues, funk, psychedelia, garage rock and traditional Zambian music, the band pioneered a genre all its own. Zambian rock cooked and spread in Zambia through the band in the period after the country’s liberation from Britain.

At the height of WITCH’s popularity, the troublemakers needed a police escort to avoid being overwhelmed by excited fans who did their best to storm the gigs – including throwing themselves from the stands onto the stage.

The band’s charismatic lead singer Emanyeo “Jagari” Chanda, whose nickname is an homage to Rolling Stone singer Mick Jagger, is today the only remaining member of the original line-up. Having long been a domestic affair, the band enjoyed a revival in 2012, not least after their records became popular abroad. In 2021, a documentary was made about Jagari and the band.

Last year saw the release of Zango, the band’s first album in almost 40 years. Now W.I.T.C.H comes to Fasching with the ill-concealed intention of causing chaos.
