When compiling a list of electronic pop pioneers, there can be some disagreement. But there is no doubt that Liverpool’s Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark qualifies alongside Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, Pet Shop Boys, New Order and Human League. The way OMD made pop music in the early ’80s may be part of the contemporary mainstream today, but back then their way of writing catchy, electronic pop was futuristic. It was so innovative that legendary record label FACTORY’s equally legendary boss Tony Wilson once told the two teenagers Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey that they were “the future of pop music” before releasing their debut single Electricity. This was the start of a successful yet artistically uncompromising career where, over 13 albums, the band have refined their hybrid of a deep love of Kraftwerk with an unmistakable ability to write warm, romantic pop music. OMD is today one of England’s most beloved bands and now we have the honor of presenting them again on Swedish stages – January 24 at Münchenbryggeriet in Stockholm, and January 25 at Trädgår’n in Gothenburg.

After an 80s where OMD barely left the charts, there was a period where inspiration was absent. The band members began to devote their time to other things. The turning point came when they were asked to participate in a TV show in Germany in 2006. Surprised by the fans’ love and the joy of playing together again led to a formal reunion. OMD, unsurprisingly, turned out not to be a band content to play old classics. Creativity resurfaced and the band has since released several albums. The upcoming Bauhaus Staircase, released on October 27, will be album number 14.
