LP entered the pop music scene at the turn of the millennium. Their debut album ‘Heart-Shaped Scar’ was released in 2001. Both the debut and the 2004 follow-up ‘Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol’ were critically acclaimed. But the biggest successes did not materialize.

So as the 00s entered the 10s, LP began writing songs for others. These included Rihanna, Cher and Sweden’s Erik Hassle. But when the year 2014 rolled around, they once again released their own album. A year later, he dropped the song “Lost On You”, which became an absolute mega-hit. More successful album releases followed, along with songwriting for others.

LP is an odd bird in pop heaven, never conforming to the classic conventions. Perhaps that’s why the biggest successes were slow in coming. But this kind of talent cannot be contained. The successes came, belatedly. It was sort of a foregone conclusion. LP’s musicality, versatility and precise positioning between alternative and mainstream pop carries so much quality that anything other than success at all levels would have been surprising.

Her story may bear similarities to Sia’s, but her vocals bear similarities to greats like Stevie Nicks, Cyndi Lauper and Chrissie Hynde. Along with all the emotional range, stage presence and the ability to seamlessly float between all sorts of pop genres, LP is both a highly unusual and outstanding pop artist.
