Original Icelandic music is often equated with the country’s strange and magnificent natural landscape. An observation as flat as it is true. You rarely get away from that trope, no matter how hard you try.
As for the Sólstafir phenomenon, they have made no secret of the importance of Icelandic nature to their music. The band started out in black and Viking metal in 1995, but has since moved further and further into post-rock territory and has increasingly been influenced by genres other than the original heavy metal. The band has been in a state of constant evolution since day one – a progressive band in the truest sense of the word.
With a vast, dreamy and atmospheric soundscape, and Icelandic vocals by Aðalbjörn “Addi” Tryggvason, Sólstafir have transformed the natural scenery that can be seen on the home island into something that can be heard anywhere. A peculiar, suggestive and melancholic sound that takes the listener into the deepest darkness of the human mind. The band is truly an odd bird in the showy rock world, with an expression that never forces itself on the listener. They let their songs unfold in a steady slow pace. Spread their wings in tasteful slowness, like the slow-motion effect of a movie – resulting in pure musical magic.
Now they bring the magic to Sweden. To warm up the audience, they have brought along Finnish and progressive doom metal in the form of The Abbey.
