Kokoroko is a London-based eight-piece band led by trumpeter and singer Sheila Maurice-Grey that excels in a fusion of jazz and Afrobeat. The band’s name is of Nigerian origin, from the Urhobo people, and means ‘be strong’. Kokoroko represents all the excitement of the London music scene – an echo of the past and a sound all its own.
The debut album Could We Be More, released in August 2022, is a testament to the sheer musical power of the band. Under its own flag, Kokoroko steers through Afrobeat, highlife, soul and funk with a range of other influences from West Africa to London and the Caribbean.
Already the winner of ‘Best Group’ at the Urban Music Awards 2020 and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2021, the collective has been honored on the NPR Austin 100 list, played at festivals around the world such as Glastonbury, Meltdown Festival, Elbjazz, Jazz a la Villette, We Out Here, SIM São Paulo and BBC6 Music Festival, and the band has also made their BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall.
The Guardian said of Kokoroko:
“a vital example of not only jazz’s new form but the shape of things to come for British music.” – The Guardian
At the Stockholm Jazz Festival, this fantastic young ensemble will perform a full evening at Slaktkyrkan.
