Kubo the Musical is an adaptation of Jozef Hollý’s play of the same name, which was written at the beginning of the 20th century. Even better known is the 1965 film version, in which the main character was played by the legendary Jozef Króner.
The story is set in a Slovak village and follows the simple but good-hearted Kubek, who inadvertently becomes entangled in village intrigues and a love triangle. Although he is “simple”, his heart is in the right place, which eventually brings him happiness.
The musical often combines folk music with modern arrangements. Various composers have contributed musically to different versions – for example, Lubomir Feldek has contributed to some of the libretto and lyrics.

Cultural icon: Kubo as a character has become a cult figure – his unforgettable lines, such as “Anča, I have a knife!”, are still famous all over Slovakia.
The musical vs. the film: Although the original play and film were more of a drama with comic elements, the musical version relied more on humor and catchy music.
Kubo the Musical has been staged on Slovak stages several times – among the most famous are the productions of the New Scene Theatre, Andrej Bagar Theatre in Nitra and Jonáš Záborský Theatre in Prešov.
Traditional costumes and folklore: the musical is often performed in rich costumes, with a strong emphasis on Slovak customs and folklore elements, which also makes it a kind of “national calling card”.
The musical KUBO is a celebration of Slovak folklore and a tribute to a giant of the Slovak film and theatre scene – Jozef Kroner.
