In Canino, spring is welcomed with strong green hues. Those of asparagus, known as “the king’s vegetable”, which every year attracts its faithful subjects to the village in the province of Viterbo: what are you waiting for to join them and delight your palate by tasting so many irresistible recipes? Circle red in your agenda on the weekend of 9 and 10 April, because the Asparagus Festival will be celebrated on the table with tastings and themed menus, and in the alleys of Canino with guided tours, sporting events and musical performances.
In this stretch of Upper Lazio, asparagus is known as the “mangiatutto”; it ripens already in January, in large quantities and of excellent quality: and if nothing is thrown away from the pig, as an old saying goes, few people know that in Canino this rule also applies to asparagus. Come and taste it together with the other pearls of the local gastronomy, starting with DOP extra virgin olive oil. The rich menu includes an appetizer with Canino cheeses and salami and bruschetta with asparagus pate, pasta with sausage and asparagus, stew with asparagus cream and baked breaded veal chops with asparagus seasoned with DOP oil. Don’t you already have your mouth watering?
In Canino, then, not only good food awaits you, but also lots of fun. You will be able to browse the stalls of the vintage market, admire painting exhibitions and attend theatrical performances; then there will be equestrian games, street band performances, the election of the most original asparagus of the party and the cooking of the largest omelette in the world. And even the little ones will be spoiled for choice between inflatables, saddle baptism, face painting, music and entertainment dedicated to them.
But Canino is also history: in fact, Alessandro Farnese was born here – later to become Pope Paul III – and it was also here that he lived and was buried together with the Luciano Bonaparte family, Napoleon’s brother. On Sunday 10 April you can choose between several guided tours to discover the village and its surroundings, and watch the evocative parades of the historical procession and flag-wavers. You will be enchanted by the jewels that the village holds: the Bonaparte palace, the Farnesiana fountain, the Town Hall building and the medieval quarter known as “Le Buche”. Furthermore, starting from Canino, it is possible to go to the discovery of a territory rich in history, which preserves real jewels such as the Necropolis of Vulci and the Abbadia Castle.
A few kilometers from the border with Tuscany, on gentle hills covered with olive trees, Canino is a must to welcome spring in the name of taste and fun!
