Open Air Cinema

Throughout the month of August, Vienna’s Main Library (Hauptbücherei) transforms its rooftop into one of the city’s most atmospheric open-air cinemas.

Kino am Dach (Cinema on the Roof) invites film lovers to enjoy hand-picked movies under the stars, accompanied by a spectacular sunset panorama over the rooftops of Vienna.

Located directly at Urban-Loritz-Platz, the rooftop of the Hauptbücherei is not just a reading hub by day – by nightfall in summer, it becomes a magical spot where cinephiles gather. The 2025 edition runs throughout August, with screenings every evening (weather permitting). This year’s theme is “Love Stories”, presenting a curated selection of romantic classics, contemporary gems, and international favorites.

The cinematic experience begins around sunset (approx. 8:30 PM), when the terrace fills with a relaxed audience. Guests can enjoy snacks and drinks on site or bring their own cushions and blankets for comfort. The terrace accommodates over 80 people, ensuring an intimate but communal experience.
